orange or red explored the opportunities presented by combining two durable materials: rattan and recycled PET yarn. The result is an innovative synthesis, from which brilliant objects emerge: sustainable, circular, with a timeless aesthetic.
Strong and durable
Recycled PET yarn is extremely strong and durable and has a subtle sheen. In addition to being versatile, rattan is lightweight, bendable and strong. It’s also recyclable, and ideal for combining with other materials.
Modular, circular
Designer Marieke van Heck studied the materials themselves: their specific qualities and the ways they could be connected. She developed a modular system in which elements can be used in varying compositions, replaced or separated from each other for reuse.
Objects
To illustrate the versatility of this modular system, Marieke developed three concrete objects: a screen, a round object and a light. Curved rattan uprights are literally interwoven with cloths made of PET yarn - the materials themselves form the construction. The result is an entirely new image; the deceptive simplicity of the construction and the material itself create a unique aesthetic.
